Trumpet Teaching Method

Trumpet Teaching Method

I prepare students to make music with other people. The repertoire and the skills I work on are part of our common culture. This includes jazz, pop and brass band repertoire of various sorts. My method develops foundational skills in tone production, musical literacy and performance. In addition to these skills I place a special emphasis on improvisation, ensemble leading skills and creative reimagining of music in a way that is appropriate to the setting.

Beginner students work from the Tradition of Excellence series in order to keep pace with the Burlington School system music program. Advanced students work from the Arbans method with extensive use of repertoire appropriate to the social music making contexts of the student.

I have prepared students for recitals and for district competitions. I have also led students in many ensembles including the Edmunds Middle School 6th grade jazz ensemble, the ONE Band, and the Brass Balagan.

As a trumpet player I trained under Patricia Schonk and William Clemmons.
